Welcome to the On the Ground: Baltimore with Grassroots Grantmakers, hosted by Baltimore Community Foundation - October 5 – 8, 2016 Intentionally small to facilitate networking and peer exchange, our annual “on the ground” gatherings use the work of a field-leading place-based investor as a platform for learning on a particular theme. Howison brings over 15 years of arts education, programming, and funding experience to the Endowments. Most recently he served as Senior Program Officer for Catalytic Funding for The Sprout Fund, spearheading their grantmaking programs, supervising funding resources awarded through the organization’s programs and overseeing its grantee portfolio. Howison’s portfolio has spanned. Prior to joining The Heinz Endowments, Mac was the Senior Program Officer for Catalytic Funding at The Sprout Fund, where he worked with regional and national philanthropic partners to build strong networks and make nearly $7 million of community-decided investments in more than 1,000 early-stage projects, organizations, innovators, and activities.

Mac Howison, Program Officer of Catalytic Funding, provided a foundation for attendees’ thinking on Connected Learning, a framework that reimagines the learning experiences of young people–connecting the 3 spheres of life that matter most to them–their peer culture, their interests, and their academics. Howison comes to the Heinz Endowments from the Sprout Fund where he served as the senior program officer for Catalytic Funding for six years, leading Sprout’s grantmaking portfolio of over 700 projects and administering investments of over $5 million.

PITTSBURGH, PA September 13, 2017 – The Heinz Endowments today announced the appointment of Mac Howison as Program Officer for Creative Learning. Howison will take up his new position on October 3, 2017, and his work will focus primarily on grantee initiatives that intersect with the Endowments’ Creativity and Learning program areas.

The Program Officer for Creative Learning is a newly created position, and reflects the Endowments’ emphasis on work that helps ensure a regional environment where all Pittsburgh residents – especially children and youth – have access to the benefits of creative opportunities. Howison will help develop and implement a range of cross-sectional grantmaking activity related to arts education and creativity in both public education and out-of-school settings. The Endowments supports grantmaking in three primary emphasis areas - Creativity, Learning, and Sustainability – with particular attention given to the work of nonprofits that crosses over into one or more of the emphasis areas.
